Utah Local Search Study

A business can appear very differently in Google Maps depending on where the customer is standing, while the same company may rank organically across a much broader area. The Utah Local Search Study is designed to measure that difference across real Utah markets.

Questions We Want the Data to Answer

How quickly does Maps visibility change with distance?

Use local grid observations rather than one rank check from an unknown point.

How does organic visibility compare with the map footprint?

Track whether service and city pages extend visibility beyond the strongest local-pack area.

What review patterns appear among top local results?

Record count, rating and recency while avoiding claims that reviews alone caused the ranking.

How often are top map results physically located in the search city?

Compare the business location with the city being queried.

Which landing-page types appear in organic results?

Homepage, service, city, county, directory and other page types can be compared by industry and market.

Utah Markets

A useful sample can include Salt Lake City, Draper, Sandy, South Jordan, Lehi, Orem, Provo, Layton, Ogden, St. George, Washington, Hurricane and Cedar City because those markets include dense metro areas, county-border relationships and Southern Utah geography.

What Gets Recorded

• Service/query

• Search point or grid label

• Top local-pack businesses

• Business location or service-area status

• Review count, rating and recency snapshot

• Primary category

• Top organic results

• Landing-page type

• Observed city/county structure

• Collection date

Correlation Is Not Causation

If top-ranking businesses have more reviews, that is a pattern worth reporting. It does not prove reviews alone created the ranking. If nearby businesses rank strongly, that does not prove proximity is the only local factor.

How This Improves Utah Local SEO Strategy

The finished study can replace broad claims with measured Utah examples inside our Local SEO and Utah Locations content.

Does a service-area setting make a business rank throughout the selected area?

The study is designed to measure real visibility rather than assume profile settings create proximity. Local results should be evaluated from multiple points across the market.

Why compare Maps and organic results separately?

They have different ranking dynamics. A business can have broad organic visibility while Maps remains strongest closer to its real location.
